Introduction

         

          Sikkim is divided into 4 district viz. North, East, South and West. South Sikkim is the smallest and second densely populated State of Sikkim. It encompasses the area of 750 sq. km and located between 880 28’08” to 880< 2176 > 29’07” East longitude and 27012’40” to 27030’99 North latitude with a population of 131000. There are 45 Gram Panchayat Units with 145 blocks. The terrain is hilly with an elevation ranging form 300 to 5000 m. The slope varies form 80m to more than 600 km. The soil of this area is highly acidic. The district has tropical to temperate climate and experience, drizzling showers to torrential rain.

 

          The temperature varies with altitude and slope. The maximum temperature is between 15 to 300C in month of July and August and minimum between 2 to 100C during December and January. The annual rainfall varies from 2000 to 2200 mm. The district is predominantly agriculture with gross crop area of 7530 ha. The irrigated area of district is about 5270.14 ha. Maize is the main crop followed by Rice, Wheat, Pulses and Vegetables. Ginger is the main commercial crop followed by Cardamom and Orange. The best practice of Sikkim is Temi tea followed by Boom binding by the Farmers Club.

 

          Namchi is the Head Quarter were all the district office are located. The KVK South was establish in Feb’07 at Namthang about 25 km. away from the district Head Quarter. KVK has 12 ha of land at its disposal. The infrastructures are yet to be constructed. Namthang is declared as the dry belt of the district.
